Are Fat Tire E-bikes a Good Choice?

Fat tire bikes have been around for a very long time, and fat tire e-bikes are growing in popularity every year. There are lots of reasons why e-bikes have become an extremely fast-growing segment of the bicycle market. For anyone interested in a fun and healthy outdoor activity, the pedaling assistance coming from a strong motor and capable battery opens all sorts of biking possibilities. Even people who thought their bike-riding days were long gone are finding they can once again enjoy biking for pleasure, sport, heart-healthy exercise, and even commuting. Fat tire e-bikes are gaining a broad segment of electric bike fans, partly because they can easily go places that a thin tire cannot go.

This rather amazing popularity is confirmed by sales. Since March of last year, mountain bike sales have grown by 60%. Total sales in the US last year reached $1,464,000,000. It’s truly amazing that 47,000 bikes are being sold every day. Electric fat tire bikes are claiming their share of the bike industry growth. It’s no wonder — people are discovering the joy of riding off-road, far from exhaust fumes and heavy traffic.

The “Pro’s” of Fat Tire E-bikes

The amazing fast rise in the popularity of fat tire electric bikes is enough to let us know that there must be some very nice benefits to fat tires. Let’s take a look at the details.

Improved Stability and Balance

Fat tires provide a superb foundation for riding. That nice, wide footprint makes for a very stable ride that helps the rider retain good balance. Fat tire e-bikes are simply easier to ride! Every rider is interested in easier control and balance. Experienced riders love having more control, and new riders can more quickly become competent and at ease.

Traction, Traction, Traction

What’s the most important feature of any bicycle tire? You guessed it — traction. The traction provided by the tread on your tires keeps your bike moving and upright. Most fat tire electric bikes have tires that are 4″ wide, or at least 3″ wide. Common sense tells us that a 4″ wide tire naturally provides far more traction than a 1.5″ or 2″ wide tire. Fat tire e-bikes are the undisputed champiion of bicycle traction.

More Fun More Often

When riding is fun and comfortable, we tend to do it more often. With the extra stability, control, and balance, riding is more fun…even if you ride every day. A big part of the “comfy” aspect of fat tire e-bikes is that those 4″ wide tires offer a lot of cushioning. They really are helpful in absorbing the bumps, whether it’s potholes on city streets or exposed tree roots on a forest trail.

Fat Tires are All-Terrain Tires

No matter where you like to ride, a fat tire e-bike can get you there in style and comfort. Those wide tires with the extra traction are equally at home on neighborhood streets or rough and rocky trails, You can also tackle wet roads, muddy pathways, or scenic sandy beaches with confidence. With a fat tire electric bike, you have the added benefit of lowering your tire pressure as needed. For example, if you’re enjoying a ride along the surf, you might bring your tire pressure down as low as 5 or 6 PSI, and you just can’t do that with a thin tire. That extreme low PSI gives your fat tire e-bike even better traction in sand or mud. And with proper caution, you can even ride in snow.

The “Cons” of Fat Tire E-bikes

There’s no such thing as a perfect tire, and even fat tires have a few drawbacks. Here’s what you should know…

Weight Can’t be Avoided

Manufacturing a tough, stable 4 inch wide tire with the same weight as a 2 inch tire is simply not possible. The extra weight is noticeable, and so fat tire e-bikes are always heavier than an equivalent e-bike equipped with thin tires. This means a little more effort is required if you’re lifting a fat tire electric bike onto a bike rack. But fortunately, the extra weight is definitely not a problem when it comes to riding. With the enormous power of modern e-bike motors, you won’t even notice the extra weight.

More Pedaling Effort is Needed

The same feature that gives more traction and more cushioning also makes fat tire e-bikes harder to pedal. You’ll notice that right away if you pedal the bike without motor assistance. Again, this is not at all a problem because the e-bike motors overcome rolling resistance so easily that you’ll never think about it.

You Get What You Pay For

Yes, it’s true, fat tires are a little more expensive. That’s to be expected, as manufacturing a bigger tire obviously requires more material. To accommodate the larger tires, fat tire e-bikes must have sturdier, wider rims. Thus, the overall cost of a fat tire is greater than the cost of a thinner tire. But the benefits make it more than worth the extra expense.

Selecting a Fat Tire Electric Bike

There are a few key items to check as you shop for a fat tire e-bike. Each item is important, so you want to be sure you are purchasing a fat tire e-bike that “checks all the boxes.”

  • Power

You’re making a significant investment, so you want to ensure that your new ride has the power to take you to all the places you enjoy riding. If your fat tire e-bike cannot handle the steep hills or provide the speed you need, then your riding is severely limited. Look for a 750 watt motor, and also you want a motor that provides plenty of torque, at least 85 Neuton Meters and preferably 95 NM or more.

  • Range

Excellent power is a must, but all that power isn’t of much use if your fat tire electric bike can’t run for longer rides. As you shop for your new e-bike, look for a battery that has a minimum of 48 volts and 14 amp hour capability. Anything less and you likely will not be satisfied with your purchase.

  • A few fat tire e-bike customers will want an e-bike that is designed for a specific purpose, such as commuting, cargo delivery, or technical trail riding. Most riders want an e-bike that is suitable for several types of riding. Commuting to your workplace daily is great, but perhaps you also want take weekend rides at the beach, enjoy the scenery along a gravel road, or experience the quiet of an off-road trail. Look for a fat tire e-bike equipped for multipurpose use.
  • Payload

Payload is the total amount of weight your fat tire electric bike can carry safely, including the weight of the rider and any gear or accessories you may want your bike to carry. Look for a minimum of 300 pounds, and more is better. The more body weight a rider carries, the higher payload he or she will need.

  • Quality

You’ve found a fat tire e-bike with good power and range, so now we look for the most important factor…quality. It’s the quality of your bike that determines the safety, reliability, and longevity. Consider limiting your search to only those e-bike brands that own the factory that builds their e-bikes. Unless a company owns the factory, excellent quality control is impossible.

The New All-Purpose All-Terrain Magicycle Deer ESUV Bike

For 2023, Magicycle Inc. is introducing a multipurpose fat tire e-bike, the Magicycle Deer ESUV. If you aren’t familiar with the ESUV term, that’s because it is a relatively new classification of e-bikes. You may have seen the ESUV term only in relation to automobiles, but it is becoming more and more in vogue for the e-bike market.

An ESUV bike can be thought of as the marriage of a strong EMTB (electric mountain bike) with a comfortable cruiser-style e-bike. The result is a ride that is very comfortable for cruising the streets or commuting to your workplace, but at the same time it is also very capable to take you on off-road adventures.

The Magicycle Deer ESUV is an especially stable, comfortable, and convenient fat tire e-bike. Everyone loves the full suspension softail feature, and this e-bike also has something that is very difficult to find in an ESUV — it is designed with step-thru frame. The vast majority of these all-round multipurpose ESUV bikes come only with step-over frames.

Get There in Style and Comfort

Wherever you may like to ride, the Magicycle Deer is equipped to get you where you want to go. Riders can explore with confidence, knowing the Deer gives all the needed comfort, power, and range. For most riders, comfort is important, but not at the expense of power.

The Magicycle Deer gives you plenty of both! Knowledgeable ESUV shoppers definitely want a full-suspension (softail) bike equipped with the power and torque you need to navigate the trails, steep hills, and long commutes. When you think about quick starts, cruising speed, and hill-climbing ability — all these are dependent on power and torque. You want an ESUV bike equipped with a strong motor, providing plenty of power. Those steep climbs where you catch the best views are no fun at all without a powerful high-torque motor that gets you to the top. The Magicycle Deer comes equipped with a 1100 watt (peak) motor that will satisfy the demands of hill climbing, giving you the confidence to go off-road or tackle the steepest hills in your neighborhood.

For easy, comfortable, relaxed riding, this freshly enhanced hub motor is an obvious choice. That choice is confirmed when you realize that hub motors are far more economical than mid-drive motors. With 1100 watts of peak power (750 watts nominal), the Magicycle Deer’s hub motor is the perfect size. If you settle for a 250 watt, or even a 500 watt motor, your ESUV will feel underpowered on the steep hills.

To accompany all that power from the Deer, riders also get an amazing amount of torque. After all, the Magicycle Deer is a full-suspension ESUV intended for riding on any terrain, including tough and steep trails. To accomplish this, it absolutely must have a motor that delivers excellent torque. The Magicycle Deer’s motor is meticulously engineered to produce industry-leading torque — 96.8 Neuton meters! You won’t find many e-bikes that can give you that kind of torque. In fact, the Magicycle Deer has about the same torque as an 800cc motorcycle!
